One Journey, One Lesson

One of my clients, a young married teacher, was suffering from recurring panic attacks, occurring around 3–4 times per week. Despite her dedication and good intentions at work, she faced ongoing criticism at home, which led to intense emotional stress, overthinking, and a deep fear of panic episodes.

When I first met her, she appeared exhausted and hopeless. She had been trying to find solutions online—watching videos and reading content on platforms like Google and YouTube—but was overwhelmed by too many options and couldn’t find any tool that worked effectively for her situation.

Intervention and Tools Used : In my counseling sessions with her, I focused on creating emotional safety and clarity through consistent and accessible techniques. The tools I used included:

* Deep Breathing Exercises  to regulate her nervous system

* Gratitude Diary to redirect her attention from fear to appreciation

* Grounding Techniques to help her stay present during anxious moments

* Humming Sound Practice  to activate the body’s calming response

* Affirmations to rebuild confidence and reshape negative thought patterns

Outcome: Through regular sessions and daily practice, she experienced a complete cessation of panic attacks. More importantly, she developed strong emotional confidence, and expressed that even if symptoms were to return, she now felt fully capable of handling them.

She told me that the counseling sessions gave her a new understanding of mental health and the ability to experience  genuine happiness. With deep emotion, she once said, “You changed my life.”

Personal Reflection: This case stands out as one of the most powerful and fulfilling experiences of my counseling and training journey. Witnessing this transformation—from despair to inner strength—gave me great personal satisfaction and strengthened my belief in the healing potential of simple, compassionate methods.

It reminded me that counseling is not always about solving problems but about creating a space where people can rediscover their own strength. This client’s journey continues to inspire me and gives me the encouragement to grow further in this field. Roshan Gurung
